Hurricane Gustav
September 2, 2008
Gustav passed to the west of us and, other than putting a damper on the holiday weekend, we're happy to say that the storm did not cause any reported damage to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach.
The evacuation Governor Bob Riley ordered on Sunday for low-lying and flood-prone areas of southern Mobile and Baldwin counties was lifted by the Governor on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Businesses are open as usual this morning. There may be a few that are closed because they are in particularly low-lying areas, but those are the exception.
We ask visitors and residents to pay attention to the beach warning flags posted on all public beaches. The flags are there to alert beachgoers to surf conditions. Though Gustav has passed us, it is likely to cause dangerous rip currents and swimming conditions throughout the week.
[For an explanation of the flag warning system, check out the Beaches page under "Things to Do" at Gulfshores.com or Orangebeach.com. The information is also included in the "Play it Safe" brochure in our Welcome Centers. These brochures are available for Industry Partners. Please email Philip Piper for a supply for your business.]
The only road closing we know of is Hwy 180 from Fort Morgan to mile marker 3. Some roads in low-lying areas may have water up to or over them. Extreme caution should be used when approaching these areas and you should never drive through standing water.
The most current local information is available on the CVB's Storm Alert page.
