Lee Sentell interviewed on tourism growth in Alabama
June 4, 2009
State tourism director Lee Sentell was interviewed Wednesday on WSFA-12 in Montgomery on the growth of the Alabama tourism industry. Tourism increased by 3% in Alabama last year with more than 22 million people visiting the state and spending nearly $9.6 billion. That spending raised more than $702 million in state and local tax revenue for Alabama. A higher percentage of visitors are coming to Alabama from Atlanta, Nashville, Houston and other neighboring areas as people continue to plan vacations closer to home. Popular tourist destinations and activities this summer include the Gulf Coast beaches, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Helen Keller Birthplace, Alabama State Parks, and the state-wide June Walking Tours.
