New Pier at Gulf State Park opens
July 28, 2009
Gov. Bob Riley cut the ribbon last Thursday to officially open the new pier at Gulf State Park. This highly-anticipated $14.8 million project is now the longest pier on the Gulf of Mexico and Alabama’s only public pier on the Gulf. The pier has several new features including indoor concession-area seating, indoor retail space for tackle and souvenirs, mid-pier comfort stations, and wheelchair accessible rail fishing. At 1,540 feet long, 20 feet wide, and boasting 2,448 feet of fishing space available along the rails, it’s much larger than the previous pier and can accommodate up to 30 people on the octagon-shaped end of the pier.
From the article “Gulf’s longest pier is unveiled; Riley says resort is next” by Ryan Dezember in the Press-Register:
On Thursday morning Gov. Bob Riley and members of his cabinet visited the $16.2 million structure and said they were proud Alabama could boast such an amenity. But they said the new pier was only one slice of their ultimate vision for the state-owned Gulf-front: A hotel and convention center would be next, they promised. "This is the second most important event that is going to take place on the Gulf Coast during Bob Riley's administration," said Lee Sentell, director of the Alabama Bureau of Tourism and Travel. "The most important one is yet to come with the groundbreaking and the start of construction on the new hotel and convention center.”
