Gulf State Park announces Geocaching activities
August 17, 2009
From the article “Geocaching in Gulf State Park” by Andrew Dunning in The Press Register:
The nationally recognized Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail offers visitors glimpses of local wildlife in their natural habitats and now includes a form of new-age treasure hunting -- geocaching. Members of the Orange Beach City Council and the Gulf State Park system, including Branyon, were at the trail last week to post signs that displayed the site's newly acquired recognition from the Department of the Interior as a national recreation trail. The trail was nationally recognized for its nearly 10 miles of paved pathways that wind through the 6,150-acre Gulf State Park, which allow visitors the chance to walk or cycle through maritime forests.Another amenity that is making the Branyon Trail a Gulf Coast attraction is the addition of three state-sponsored geocaches in the Gulf State Park. Geocaching is the use of global positioning systems to locate hidden containers in the outdoors via satellites, Sean Brumley, Orange Beach geographic information systems specialist said at an afternoon geocaching seminar. Brumley said that the recreational activity gives people the opportunity to discover new locations, spend time with friends and family and share their experiences with others on the geocaching Web site.
